Life After College..

People have this perceived misconception that life after college is elaborately planned out for you. In the real world, that just doesn’t happen. People ask me, “What are your plans?” “Have you been applying for jobs and interviewing?” “Are you going to apply to grad school?” “When are you moving out from home?” You get the idea.

This is how I feel when I’m asked all of those questions on a daily basis.

As every tired and overworked college senior, I anticipated graduation like it was crossing the finish line of a pretentious marathon.  I had this rationalization that I would land a prestigious career, live out on my own in a luxe-chic apartment and be financially independent. Well, that was pretty naive of me to think all of that could happen so quickly.

This is how I feel after applying to numerous jobs daily, while hearing no response.

Now two years after graduating, I find myself in a ceaseless job search and it’s as if I’m back at square one again. The thing is, we can’t pan out what life has in store for us. Yes, we face our emotional ups and downs. We’re relentlessly searching for ourselves through careers and our interpretation of what an ideal aspect of life should be. The problem is, we’re rushing time instead of letting it gradually take course. We’re reading success stories of college colleagues and wishing we could be experiencing it as well. Instead of wondering when we will seize a big opportunity, we should take a step back, breathe, and say to ourselves “everything is going to be okay.”

I need to keep reminding myself that this is something all young adults in their 20’s experience. We’re finding our own path in this journey called life. Whether we find it tomorrow or if it takes some time – we’re all destined to find our place in this world.
