Embracing the Challenge of Change

We are at the end of what felt like the longest month in history; and let’s just say, it’s been rather emotionally challenging. Going into 2020, it felt universally as if we could conquer all of our resolutions and goals with ease. It’s hard to find motivation to achieve the resolutions and goals we set for ourselves when there are tragic incidents happening around the world. Between the political issues kicking off the new year, wildfires in Australia, and the sudden passing of Kobe Bryant, his daughter, and seven others, it’s been really tough emotionally to get through the month of January.

I had a conversation with an HR Professional about the topic of change. Change is a word we hear so often, and ties in positive or negative emotions. Something we discussed is, how do we deal with change, and how do we overcome it? Life is extremely fragile, uncertain, and anything could happen at any moment. It is nearly impossible to prepare ourselves for change, especially when it is something so abruptly tragic. Then, I said the words, “embracing the challenge of change” in our conversation, and it turned the topic of change into a positively powerful discussion.

There have been times where I would find myself extremely wrapped up, feeling so overwhelmed because of change. I would let my anxiety get the best of me if something abruptly changed, whether it be in a situation with friends, family, work, etc. I realized that being patient with myself, taking the time to assess a situation with a silver-lining mindset instead of going into panic-mode, has really shifted the way I approach the challenges of change.

If we enter each series of change in our lives by embracing it, instead of fearing it, then we can transform negative into positive. For example, in light of the horrific helicopter crash, many celebrities who knew Kobe personally have spoken of his legacy, and how he inspired them (and others) to see the world differently, and to appreciate everything in life. I watched an interview with Magic Johnson on The Kimmel Show, where he mentioned the importance of being the best versions of ourselves. He even encouraged people to become involved in a meaningful cause, do something positive, and never make excuses, because that is how Kobe lived his life.

Changes in life are inevitable, and the changes we face can be extremely challenging at times. Sometimes change can be indescribably tragic, something we do not have control over; but at other times, change can be extraordinary. Regardless of the type, change is something we can’t push aside without facing it. How we react to change exemplifies strength, courage, and perseverance. I have such admiration for people who push through the most challenging obstacles, no matter how difficult it seems. I am continuously inspired by those who have been through so much, and no matter the challenges they face, they keep going. My hope is that we can “keep going” too, even when life seems so unfair. Embrace any obstacle, challenges, and face the changes head on; and continue to rise above.
