As the holidays are approaching, we are amidst the season of giving. The act of giving inhibits a rewarding sense that cultivates happiness within yourself and those around you. While it is encouraged to give to others during this time of year, it is equally as important for us to give back to our mental and emotional wellbeing.
The holidays can be stressful, draining, and consuming – especially during this challenging year! It is imperative for us to think of our mental and emotional health during these times. Try to think of something you can incorporate that you can give to yourself during this time of year to alleviate stress and anxiety. Something that I will give to myself is compassion – this is something that I often give to others, but I rarely ever apply this feeling toward myself in the form of self-compassion. By exuding compassion to others, I strive to motivate those around me to excel in areas where they are passionate. I enjoy doing this for others, but I truly lack doing this for myself.
How can we incorporate self-compassion into our lives? This may take a lot of time and patience, but it is worth it. Is there something that you are extremely passionate about, but you have not given yourself the time to learn and explore? This can include a new hobby, such as blogging, podcasting, learning a new instrument, learning how to master baking, etc. Is there a goal that you desperately want to achieve, but you have not allowed yourself the opportunity to commit? This can include a fitness goal, wellness goal – the possibilities are endless! Make sure that you commit to giving to yourself as you continue to give to others this holiday season. It may seem strange, especially to those who are givers; but you will be pleasantly surprised in how this simple act will improve your overall wellbeing. Set a goal for yourself this holiday season while you’re in the spirit of giving. As you give to others, be sure to give to yourself – this could be to give yourself time to clear your mind of any stressors, take a virtual gym class, run a bubble bath, or anything relating to self-care (because we all need self-care to repair our wellbeing of 2020)!
I hope you all have a wonderful and safe Thanksgiving Holiday – even if it will be much different this year, there will be better days ahead to safely celebrate with our loved ones.
