Set Realistic Goals to Support Overall Health and Wellbeing

We’re entering a new year and chapter within our journeys, and this is one we’ve all longed for. Within this new year, there is a sense of hope and positivity after closing the door of 2020, leaving its negativity behind us. After an exhausting and debilitating year, we need to give ourselves time to decompress and heal. Starting now, take the time to check-in with yourself, including your mental, emotional, and physical health.

I’ve always considered January as the month of self-reflection and igniting positive change. One of the most common methods to incorporate the themes of self-reflection and positive change is the integration of goal setting. Are there any goals that you seek to accomplish in 2021? Goal setting is a healthy habit to incorporate into our daily lives. There is a perception that goal setting can be intimidating and stressful, but goal setting should not be a negative concept. Goal setting should promote growth and development, igniting positive change to promote overall wellbeing. Goals are individualized and should encompass what will make you truly feel happy and healthy, to live out your best life. No goal is too small or too big, and goal setting is not a one-size-fits-all process. It’s important to note that goals can be challenging and not all goals will be easy to accomplish. Goals that we set for ourselves can take time, patience, and perseverance to achieve results that we are proud of. Another important takeaway to note is that the goals you set out for yourself should be intended for you, and not for anyone else. For example, setting a goal for someone else’s approval is not healthy for your mental, emotional, and physical health. Keep in mind that you need to do what will truly make you happy in life, and it should not be seeking the approval of others.

If you’re stuck on finding goals to set, ask yourself, “what makes me happy?” What new hobbies should I try, what interests me? (etc.). Remember, you are responsible for your own happiness – and you are in control of navigating this concept. If there is something that you would like to accomplish, create a plan of action and you will be rewarded with the outcome. Even if the outcome is not what you expected or anticipated, you will learn from the experience. Setting goals and tracking your progress throughout the year will be a great approach to promote positive overall wellbeing. Remember to be kind and patient with yourself so that you can remain motivated and determined to accomplish the goals that you set out for yourself in 2021.
