A new Take on Resolutions: Do Something for you in 2022!

Does the thought of a New Year’s resolution list give you anxiety? I don’t know about you, but an extensive list of goals can make me feel overwhelmed. For me personally, the thought of creating a list of goals to achieve for the year makes me feel anxious and stressed. If the list seems unattainable, I can feel a sense of self-doubt waving through me. If lists are your thing, great! Don’t feel pressured to try this new take on resolutions. I’m sure you’ve heard of the saying, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!” If detailed lists are what keeps you motivated, encouraged, and inspired, then by all means, keep it up! But if you feel a strong sense of anxiety, fear, and self-doubt when it comes to a long list of goals; and the thought of achieving them all in one year seems too stressful to bare, then hear me out…

Give yourself time to think of one thing (big or small) in the moment – something that speaks to you. It can be a big goal that you work toward, or something small – either way, choose a goal that is meaningful to you in that very moment. Maybe it’s something you often think about, but you haven’t had the time for it. Maybe it’s a big project that you have been pushing off to the side because you don’t have spare time.

Take time for yourself to think of just one thing that speaks to you; but make sure it is something that brings you joy, happiness, and peace (remember, we’re trying to alleviate stress here)! Keep in mind that this is something for you, not for others. Don’t worry about what others will think – this goal should be something for you that serves you.

If you’re struggling to find one thing that speaks to you, then dig a little deeper and ask yourself the following: Are you being too hard on yourself; and, are your thoughts holding you back from achieving this goal? Keep in mind that in order to seek and attain a goal, you need to develop a positive and supportive mindset. Believe it or not, you are supposed to be your biggest supporter. If you don’t believe in yourself, then you may experience road blocks along the way. If you struggle with being kind to yourself, you may find it difficult to achieve the goal you set out for yourself. Give yourself time to assess the following: What’s stopping me from achieving this goal? Reflect on your inner dialogue – are your thoughts positive and encouraging? Or, are your thoughts consumed with fear? In order to be your own supporter, you will need to shift fear and negative energy into positive self-talk. This step may take some time and patience, but it will be well worth it in the long run! Once you shift your inner dialogue, you will begin to feel motivated and inspired to work toward the goal you had in mind.

So let’s try something new for you in 2022! Set out a goal that serves purpose for you, something meaningful which brings you joy. Be cognizant of your mindset while processing your goal, and ask yourself the following questions to keep you on track: Are you approaching this goal with a positive mindset? () Are you feeling motivated, inspired, and encouraged? () Are you willing to be supportive for yourself as you are to others? () Lastly, are you being kind to yourself during this process? ()

If so, you’re on the right track toward achieving the goal you have set out for yourself. Remember, take the time for yourself to think of something that’s just for you.
